5 simple ways to add colour to a Bathroom

When you’re renovating a bathroom, there are some big decisions to make especially as they are the most expensive room in your home. Bathrooms should last at least 20 years if done properly, so you want them to stand the test of time and not date quickly
I’ve found that clients opt for the “safe” option when it comes to choosing colours and finishes for their bathroom, which often results in an underwhelming result at the end of the project. When you’ve spent upwards of $25,000 you want that wow factor in your home so people can see the difference. Safe choices can often leave your bathroom feeling cold, flat and lifeless with white, grey and beige as the usual colour palate. Often clients feel that these will appeal for resale when they sell their house, but you could risk turning buyers off your home due to that bland bathroom.
With so many colourful bathroom products available today, such as tiles, tapware and basins, it’s hard to know where to start or even where to stop with the colour choices. People are often frightened by colours and rightly so after the nightmares of mission brown and burnt orange in the 70s or the pastel blue and pink in the ’90s. But hiring an interior designer can give you the confidence that your colourful bathroom will remain beautiful for its lifetime.
If you want to add colour, ask yourself, what are your favourite colours? If you’re not sure, have a look in your wardrobe, the cushions on your lounge, and your bed linen. This should give you a good indication of your favourite colours. Be mindful of where you apply colour too. If you're not too sure, make it easy to change like a top mount vanity basin or the towels, rather than tiles that can't be changed easily.
Paint
Rather than choosing to go for a full floor-to-wall tile on all the walls, have a wet area tile only and paint the rest of the walls in the colour that you choose. Painting is cheap and can easily be done by yourself. It costs as much as a tin of paint and a little bit of your time enabling you to keep on top of the trends as the seasons change.
Towels
Towels come in as many colours as the rainbow enabling you to change the look and feel of your bathroom as often as you wash your towels. In winter a nice warm red fluffy towel may be in order, but in summer you can have the look of a green and blue stripe.
Artwork / Wallpaper
A large print hanging on the wall can introduce a number of different colours and really lift a space. Feeling a bit bolder, how about some bright wallpaper?
Plants
These are a great way to bring the outdoors, indoors. They create that natural feel by introducing different foliage to the space such as deep greens, light greens, green yellows and even red foliage.
Vanity Basin
In the last few years, we have seen a real trend for different colour basins. From black to pastel green, pinks and blues, this is a really popular way to add colour. A vessel that sits on top of the vanity can be easily changed by a plumber when you no longer love it and it won't cost the earth.
Colour should be embraced, it is not something to be afraid of, unlike the “safe” beige and white scheme that is all too often resorted to. We’ve all made colour mistakes in the past, like my mint green bedroom or my orange suede effect kitchen, but they only cost a tin of paint and a weekend to recover from this mistake. Colour provokes the senses and can assist with feelings of motivation and creativity which are important at the start of the day, or feelings of relaxation and peace at the end of the day. Colour is powerful and used in the right places, your new bathroom will continue to bring you joy for the next 20 years.
